This territory is of great importance not only for the populations living in the Alpine region, but also for all the inhabitants in other regions that are connected to it. In 1991 the Convention on the Protection of the Alps, recognizing the Alps as a unique, common area which needs to guarantee, in a coordinated manner, development and preservation Policy. Its goal is to develop the common heritage of the Alps and preserve it for future generations through transnational cooperation involving both countries and  local authorities, as well as the scientific community, the private sector and the civil society.
